New CHP boiler cost and energy efficient

The Combined and Heat Power systems are a  efficient energy source. The new domestic CHP boiler provides a central heating and hot water system, like  a traditional Combi-boiler, but also producing  electricity simultaneously.  Consumers will save on cost, not only on their electricity bill, but also they may able to sell unused electricity back to the local grid of the proposed Government Clean Energy Back Scheme.  So the total energy cost is reduced.  There are also less carbon emissions overall, because the energy produced by the boiler is used twice, once for heating the home and its water supply and once for generating electricity.

The Baxi Ecogen is already on the market. The new CHP boiler is generating both a domestic heating and electricity supply.  In appearance it is similar to a conventional wall hung unit and has  low noise levels. The Baxi Ecogen has been rewarded for its energy efficiency.

There is also a Worcester Bosch boiler being developed, which is expected to be on sale in 2011. This new boiler has a free piston Sterling engine and does not require any maintance  during the life of the unit.  It is very environmental friendly, for the heat released from the unit during the production of electricity is utilised for heating the home including the water supply.

Byd plans to be world’s leading carmaker by 2025

359696_electric_charging_signByd, the Chinese car company, is planning to sell 9 million hybrid or plug-in cars by 2025. Backed by investment guru Warren Buffet, the company will aspire to be China’s number 1 automaker in the next few years.

However, Byd’s F3DM plug-in hybrids had not been sold so well last year. In august fewer than 100 cars have been manufactured. So if the company will  be  the world’s leading carmaker by 2025  more competition is needed.  Toyota, currently the largest carmaker,  sold 9 million cars and trucks last year.

More success will be expected with the e6 all electric car, that will be introduced later this year. This new five-passenger car carries a price tag of about $44.000, twice the cost of the F3DM plug-in hybrid. By selling the e6,  Byd expects some support of the Chinese government which is very interested  in greener cars and intends to buy the electric cars for fleet owners.

The e6 will appear on the US market in 2010. The car is excellently appropriated  for a  typical American  family and has a range of 200 to 250 miles. As yet  the e6 has not been tested  on quality, crashworthiness and equipment and yet certified.

Despite some setbacks, the sale of green cars has  been succesfull. Byd’s gaspowered F3 was the number 1 selling car in China three times this year. In the first eight months 250.000 cars were sold.

Byd’s stock surged about 650 percent the past year, thanks to rising sales and Warren Buffet’s fiat.  Buffet earned a cool $ 1 billion after paying $230 million for a 10 percent stake . He is intending to raise  his stake this year, accoring to the company’s chairman Wang Chanfu.

Fifth phase Doe program succesfull

The  installing  and testing of thermoelectric waste heat recovering generators in BMW Group and Ford vehicles by Amerigon Incorporated, is a  critical step forward in the development of  a cost-effective energy waste heat  system and power generation  into vehicle production.

There  has been made much progress in this fifth phase of the funded program US Department Engergy (DOE), studying the use of thermoelectric systems to converte waste heat from automobile engine exhaust into electrical power.  BSST, a subsidiary of Amerigon,  is being led  this  program. The DOE program intends to  improve automobile fuel economy and supports the DOE’s objectives of reducing dependency of foreign energy imports and lowering greenhouses gas emissions while supporting the increased electrification of vehicle powertrains.  The DOE will contribute approximately $ 1,1 million in funding and BSST wil offer an additional $ 370.000 for this fifth phase of the project, which has a targeted completition date of March 31, 2010.

BSST was founded in 2000  to develope advances in themoelectric systems. It’ s  mission is to provide highly efficient, effective, and practical solid -state temperature control and power generation solutions to industry.  Through sustained research and development the team  of BSST will going on with  the technology by improving  the science of thermoelectric  technology.

BSST is working very hard to advance  the technology  of thermoelectric devices particularly as it applies to heating and cooling’ said  Amerigon President and Chief Executieve Officier Daniel R. Cooker. ‘ Their efforts  are agreeing  fully with government and private industry, aimed at pushing the variety of uses for thermoelectric technology beyond our current automotive seating application. In the next few months we hope to  report you more about the  progress with this program and others.’

Huge solar farm build by US firm

First Solar, a US solar panel firm,  plans to build  a two-gigawatt solar farm  in990288_solar_panel_in_the_field_4 China.   The farm will be 20 times bigger than the solar energy farm, China is now building in Portugal. When the farm is working in five years, it will produce one thousand megawatts, one gigawatt of energy.  This is about 10 times more than the country’s entire installed solar capacity at the moment. In 2019 the plant in Inner Mongolia, will be generating  two gigawatts.

So far the Chinese government has been pretty cautious about solar energy. Officials were not very excited about the idea  to build much solar capacity until they knew for sure wich technology they wanted  to support. They preferred to cooperate with  First Solar, one of American  most technologically advanced companies. It is remarkable that they did not choose  a Chinese firm.

The  thin film panels, now technically improved   by First Solar,  will not be entirely manufactured in China.  The firm is considering to build a factory in Ordos. Inner Mongolia.  If the plan will be executed,  it is expected  that  if Chines engineers, after learning and improving  the technology,  start making their own thin film panels to compete with First Solar.

The Chines industry plans to generate 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.  Yet the industry will  still mostly rely on coal in the near  future.  Currently China  is the leader, when it comes to  pollution and greenhouses gases.  No other county emits so much CO2.

Solon solar powered passenger ship

Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit  has formal launched  the first  passengership deriving its power from solar energy.  The SOLON  is a zero emission ship, producing  clean and green energy and running  on alternative fuels. It is manufactured by Solon SE a  Berlinbased solar company.

cruiseshipOn the roof of the ship are installed 24 solar modules with a capacity of 5,6 kWp.  They take care of the  energy needs of the  ship.  The ship has also the distinction of first solar charging station for solar powered boats in the Kopenick district of Berlin.  SolarWaterWorld AG,  the  manufacturer en operator  of it, is working together with Solon SE. . Both companies  have more than 17 years of experience in the research  and developping of solar shipping.  ‘We are pleased  that in Solon SE we have a strong partner that is involved  in the wideranging expansion of climate-friendly solar mobility’  says CEO Thomas Meyer.  ‘ The future belongs to solar mobility and whether its on road, rails or water,  SOLON is one of the main drivers of this development.’

The  solar ship will provide accomodation for 60 passengers. It  will sail on Berlin’s waterways  and offer tours of the city and cruise  trips.  It is the most greenhouse emitting clean ship  for inlands tours that will make the trip environment friendly.   Though the ship is costly, Solon SE is trying to make it easy on pocket too. Anyway, it has the advantage to remain uneffected by fluctuations in future fuel price.

In 2006/2007  a  prototype of this craft completed its first Atlantic crossing to New York.  SolarWaterWorld now manufacturers and sells production built C-60 catamarans worldwide. Also a smaller version in the form of the Suncat23 is for sale. The possibility to sail without licence makes it appropiate  to use by boat hire companies.
